Tropical Storm Hermine - Preparedness Information
Posted Date:
August 31, 2016 Tropical Storm Hermine Update and Preparedness Information

The Town of Longboat Key, Sarasota and Manatee Counties, along with regional partners, are coordinating efforts in monitoring and preparing for the approaching storm’s potential impact to the area. Regardless of the wind speed and location of landfall, the storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall for much of Florida and Southern Georgia

While using roadways, travelers are advised to use caution and should not attempt to drive through moving water or water of undetermined depth. Turn around, don’t drown.  If you must travel during a storm event consider your route as both roadways to the mainland are prone to flooding.

Stay tuned to local media for emergency updates and additional public safety information.

Prepare your yard and property for storm winds. Secure or put away all lawn ornaments and furniture.   Don’t forget to secure your boats.

Construction job sites should also be prepared for severe weather. Construction activities should be stopped or delayed as a storm approaches. Tie or band together all loose plywood and lumber. Locate and turn off electricity, water and gas.

Areas that have flooded frequently in the past should be aware of potential high waters due to higher than normal tides (+2.5 tide at 12:01pm on Wednesday, August 31 and 2.4 tide at 12:41pm on Thursday, Sept 1).

In preparation for the storm, Public Works staff has cleaned out storm drains as needed.

Sand, bags, and shovels are available at the Broadway Beach Access on the North end of the island.

Flooding precautions before a storm:

·       Keep on hand a battery-operated flashlight and radio.

·       Learn evacuation routes.

·       Keep your vehicle fueled, since power failure may render gas stations inoperable.

Flooding precautions during a storm:

·       Avoid areas subject to sudden flooding.

·       Do not attempt to cross a stream where water is above your knees.

·       Do not drive over a flooded road. The water can be much deeper than it appears and you could be stranded or trapped.

·       Do not drive around police barricades.

·       Stay away from drains and ditches.

Call 9-1-1 for any medical, fire, or police emergency!

*After the storm, make sure to empty any containers that may have accumulated rain water to stop mosquitoes from breeding.
