Red Tide Update
Posted Date:
Town staff has been working to remove dead fish from the most highly impacted Longboat Key beaches since Saturday, October 1 and continue through the present date.

On Saturday, October 1, the Town began removing dead fish from our beaches. Public Works staff began at Gulfside Road (6700 Gulf of Mexico Drive) where the heaviest concentration of dead fish was located. Currently, the cleanup is moving south from the 5500 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive and will continue as long as there are heavy concentrations of dead fish on the beach.

The Town was required to obtain permits and also receive daily clearance under marine turtle regulations before putting equipment on the beach because marine turtle nesting season is still in effect (May 1 to November 1).

We are monitoring the bay side canals for concentrations of dead fish. The things we look for include:

·      Amount of dead fish on the beach or floating on canals

·      Smell

·      Weather conditions (wind, tides, currents, etc.)

·      Costs

·      Remaining concentration of Red Tide organism in the area

All these and other factors are taken into consideration before a clean-up campaign is undertaken. Staff understands that this is a quality of life issue for our residents and strives to balance that in its decision to spend public funds.

Crews are making good progress and have reached about the 1500 block or just south of the Colony. There are less fish on the beach and no signs of dead fish just off-shore. We have had favorable winds since Friday night which has helped. We have taken approximately 37.32 tons of dead fish to the landfill.

There is minimal dead fish in the canals. We continue to monitor the canals daily.

We have also removed a back-hoe bucket of dead fish from the Town’s boat ramp.
