The following information was provided by the Florida Department of Transportation concerning the Cortez Road Safety Improvements Project:

The attachments are the flier for the upcoming public hearing on May 9, 2017, a potential interim improvement that could be constructed in time for next years peak season, and a final improvement that could be constructed within two years or so that would realign the intersection.  The analysis summary also attached shows the traffic flow improvements that would result from the improvements.  You will see that there is very significant improvements associated with both the interim and final scenarios.

The interim alternative would allow for left turns onto 119th from westbound Cortez (into the Village) but not left turn out to go west on Cortez.  Those drivers would need to turn right and then U-turn after the road widens to four lanes.  This movement is not a heavy movement as the vast majority of the traffic from Cortez is heading to or coming from the east (Bradenton).  Similarly the eastbound left turn onto 119th would be prohibited, but that movement is extremely light.  Even though I believe we would see very big improvements from the interim alternative, I do expect significant opposition from folks in Cortez as it would be an inconvenience to some people.

I also wanted to point out that the realignment option is dependent upon the County being able to allow us to go through the vacant property on the north side of the Maritime Museum building.  It is owned by the County but controlled by the Clerk of the Circuit Court and has some restrictions on how the land can be used.
